The idea for this picnic set came from a picture a client clipped from a magazine. She wanted a similar design made from solid heart redwood- and also big enough to accomodate large family gatherings. We also liked the design, but thought we could give it a couple of extra details.

First, we had to translate a picture into a workable set of shop drawings, complete with accurate dimensions, proportional relationships to adjoining members and a sequencing list of assemblies. Also, as this was clearly for outdoor use, we wanted to use construction techniques and joinery methods that would withstand years of exposure to the elements. To this end, we incorporated half-lap and thru tenoning joinery, including a unique thru-dowel technique that allows for end grain joinery of various pieces. Finally, we had a picnic set that the client loved and that we were proud of.
